Birth Chart Interpretation: Looking At Fertility

birth chart interpretation fertility
Traditional birth chart interpretation uses many different indicators to reveal fertility.  This question was submitted today:

My life dream is to have 5 kids by age 45, but I’ve had PCOS for 13 years, and Oct 28th’s CT Scan found a multiseptated hypodense lesion in my midline pelvis measuring 8.5 x 6.9 x 6.7 cm. It’s likely originating from my right-ovary. Does my natal chart show infertility, or will I be okay?

Finding Fertility in the Birth Chart

The indicators are mixed in this birth chart, but our interpretation will reveal a specific conclusion.

Traditional astrological techniques to delineate fertility involve finding planets in the birth chart that promise children in the 1st, 10th, 11th, 7th or 5th, and noting the proliferation of fertile vs. sterile signs

From “Liber Astronomiae” by Guido Bonatti ca. 1282

Annuz519 and Baruch520 said, in the chapter on children (nor do they seem to have differed from the opinion of Ptolemy) that on the matter of children you ought to look at the tenth in the nativity of any native, and likewise the eleventh, the first and also the seventh; and see if one of the planets or other significators signifying children (which are Jupiter and Venus, even the Moon and Mercury and the Lord of the fifth, and the Part of Fortune and the Part of Children and their Lords) are found in the aforesaid places, or if one of those denying children (which are the Sun, Mars, and Saturn) were in them. For if one of the aforesaid significators of children (or some one of them) were in the aforesaid places, or in one of them, or even in the fifth, and they were made fortunate and strong, and one of the benefics were to aspect them by a trine or sextile with reception (or without reception), or even from a square with reception, they will signify the native is indubitably going to have children, unless that significator were with one of the fixed stars of the nature of Mars or Saturn, in the same minute.

If however they were weak, they will judge there are going to be few children for him. But if one of the aforesaid significators were not there, and the Part of Fortune or the Part of Children were there, and one of the malefics were to aspect it, it will deny children completely, whether they were weak or strong–unless perhaps one of the benefics were to aspect the malefic froma trine or sextile aspect, and with reception; or [the malefic] were with one of the fixed stars which are of the nature of Jupiter or Venus or the Moon, in the same minute (nor should it be in Leo or Virgo or Libra or Capricorn or Aquarius, or in Taurus). However, this is varied in the signification of Mercury: because if he were in one of the aforesaid places, he will incline to the nature of him with whom he is joined.

Sterile signs

Fertile Cancer rises, with both a promising and denying planet in the 1st house. Venus and Mars are in applying conjunction. Both are in a fertile sign and both rule the 5th house of children, and the 11th house of future hopes and dreams. Fertility is your ultimate dream.

This is the first mixed indication.

Jupiter is the natural ruler of fertility and increase. He is strong and fertile in his own sign of Pisces in the 10th, but he is retrograde and ruler of the 6th house of illness. Thus illness that comes and goes should be a major part of the life. Jupiter promises children.

The Role of Saturn

Saturn is in the 11th house, thankfully in Taurus. Saturn denies children, but is the ruler of the part of fortune in this chart so can produce them. More mixed significations.

Looking at the pelvis and ovaries in this chart, Saturn, ruler of the 7th and 8th, is also ruler of the part of fortune. Saturn is peregrine, in the 11th and receiving no aspect. As the 11th house is a house of hope, and Saturn is pessimism and disappointment, his presence there may represent difficulty and obstacles in realizing our dreams, or having the dreams halted or slowed down by those two different parts of the body.

Two things point to a more specific answer to your question. First of all, the Moon is also the ruler of the ascendant in this birth chart and is in the 6th house in Sagittarius (which is a sign of few children), ruled by Jupiter. The 1st house represents the health, body and vitality of the native, so Moon as ruler of the ascendant will represent all of those things. The Moon is also applying to the square of Jupiter in the 10th. Squares to benefics are usually quite useful, but Jupiter is the ruler of the 6th of illness, where the Moon is located. This is not a good indicator for the health of the body. The fact that Jupiter is the natural ruler of fertility, but also the ruler of the 6th of infirmities is an important. point.

The Part of Children

The part of children is at 6 Gemini, which is a sterile sign. Mercury is in Leo, also a sterile sign, and retrograde. The Moon is also applying to the trine to Mercury. Note that Gemini is on the cusp of the 12th house, making Mercury ruler of the 12th of self-undoing. Note also that the Moon is connected to both the universal ruler of fertility and the ruler of the part of children. In my opinion, neither connection is particularly useful for fertility.

My Conclusion on the Fertility of this Birth Chart

In my opinion, the question is less one of fertility than one of being healthy enough to viably carry a child. This chart points to general and continuous health issues which I feel must be resolved before thinking of having children. I do think a child is possible, but there is a strong will for fertility and children in this chart. If the health of the body can match the will, maybe you can have your wish.
